one word: intentional

Happy New Year!

Hello, 2018.

Admittedly, I still feel like just the other day it was the beginning of 2017. All through last year I found myself wondering how time was flying by so quickly. Does anyone else feel this way?

In regards to the New Year, I used to set resolutions like it was my job. However, by February I would forget all of my resolutions and never get around to achieving them. Fortunately last year I discovered the trend of choosing just one word. One word that I would plan to live the year by. At first I thought that it was silly to try to choose just one word to set for the year. After all there are thousands of amazing words to choose from. Finding just one to become your mantra for an entire year is intimidating.

Thankfully, the more I thought about it the more it made sense. Choosing one word would help guide and bring better focus to my year. Plus, I could remember one word much easier than a list of resolutions.

how to choose your one word:

  1. Take a few minutes and write down who you want to see yourself become. Write a paragraph and reflect on what you hope to accomplish in the coming year. Think of the end result of what you hope to achieve. Remember: this paragraph needs to be deep, important, and personal.
  2. Condense your paragraph down into one sentence. This sentence needs to encompass the main goal of the entire paragraph. Make sure that you also write down this sentence.
  3. Decide which word would best resonate with the sentence that you wrote. The word does not have to literally be contained in the sentence; just one that sums it up. You can choose an adjective, a noun, or a verb. Your one word can be whatever you want it to be. Just try to remember to choose a word that is challenging and promotes growth. Something that you can use as a mantra to give you an extra push or use as guidance. Also, don’t make the word too narrow.

I would love to hear which word you chose for 2018! Feel free to let me know in the comments.
